After I took some time in the morning to do a little bit of work, it was time to do some more touring in the afternoon. Our first stop was Bierzgłowski Castle, which is between Bydgoszcz & Toruń.
Bierzgłowski Castle was built by the Teutonic Knights in about 1260 and is one of their oldest structures. Although it is not one of the well know castles in Poland nor is it very large, it has an interesting history. Shortly after it was built, the Lithuanians destroyed it and it was rebuilt in the gothic style you see today. Since then it has seen its battles and has had to have been rebuilt a number of times over the centuries.
After you walk through the large entry, which of course was large to accommodate horses, you are in the area between the first and second wall, which appears to be the place where the horses were kept.
Inside the main area you will find a small garden. There is still a small working chapel inside the castle. Even though there are masses said in this chapel, the castle & its chapel can be rented for weddings.
I have been doing genealogy research since 2002 & have worked full time as a Professional Genealogist since 2008. I specialize in Polish and American-Canadian Genealogy. As a member of APG, I was the 2010/2011 President of the New England Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists (NEAPG). I have Certificates of Completion for studies in "Foundations of Forensic Genealogy" and "Advanced Forensic Genealogy Techniques". I have been a volunteer librarian at the local Family History Center, and a genealogy research consultant at “Ask the Expert” Ancestry Road Shows. I have traveled to Poland numerous times & researched in churches and archives. At conferences and special events, you may find me dressed up in my Sherlock Holmes outfit, or my Kujawy (the folk costume from the region in Poland where my ancestors came from).
Love your posts. I was in Poland last October, it was a religious pilgrims tour. Sadly I did not get to see any of the sites you have visited so far. Saw many beautiful churches etc., but being polish I did not get to see history of my homeland except as seen thru the church's eyes. I may not get back so your blog is showing me what I missed. Thank you.

I try to get to Poland every 2 or three years and haven't seen everything yet so your posts gives me a chance to view other areas. Last year I met family and it truly was a remarkable visit. Wish I was fluent in Polish. Awaiting your next post.
