Not far from Kraków there is a castle in the village of Tyniec. It is called of course - Tyniec Castle, which lies along the Wisła River. Tyniec Castle contains a famous Benedictine Abby formed by King Kazimierz in 1044 & is the oldest monastery in Poland and is still in operation today.
In 1831 it suffered devastation from a fire and was rebuilt shortly after the fire. You can see the old reconstruction in the stones & bricks forming the walls and buildings. The residence of the abby returned after reconstruction in about 1839.
The church shows its age with the old stone & brick on the outside, but the interior is amazingly fresh with ornate decorations with gold leaf. In the center of the castle grounds is a large well which has interesting construction.
After we completed our visit to Tyniec Castle Gosia & I took the opportunity to have a coffee & ice cream. It was quite warm and the ice cream really hit the spot. I had homemade vanilla ice cream with raspberry topping.
